Slim, lightweight, low resistance bikes designed for speed and distance. These bikes make great rides for long commutes, touring and getting to the destination quickly. From racing bikes, to touring bikes, these bikes are usually recognizable by the drop bars and large, thin wheels.
Fixies are similar in appearance to road bikes, but are a completely different type of riding. A single gear ratio with a fixed sprocket make these bikes a challenge to master, but Fixies are a not to ride.
The modern style road bike wasn't created all at once, but evolved from a light hybrid in the 1960's into the classic look with a sleek profile and drop bar handlebars in the mid 70's. Ten speeds were the standard, but the first ones had only 5 speeds and later versions featured 12. While much has changed in the materials used, reducing weight, increasing performance, and giving more efficiency to the cyclist, the concept is the same--to enjoy the speed.
