One could say that the first bicycles were hybrids, although the first was a wooden adult balance bike and bone shakers look like they belong in a circus. Back in the 1800's people were trying to find a method to easily increase a person's ability to travel individually and without using animals. Much like the early airplanes, we can't be sure who did it first, but anyhow, bicycles were invented. The design quickly became similar to modern hybrids and by 1920, brake cables, exactly like the ones we use today, were fitted onto the latest models. As culture changed, so did the hybrid. The 60's space age begot the classic heavyweight cruisers with large fenders, air horn and train lights. In the modern world, hybrids come in many forms, but as the broad category name suggests, they are all designed not to be for extreme sports, but omfortable and easy to ride casually.
